![]() To help with the cleaning, Mario finds FLUDD (short for "Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device"), a powerful water cannon touted like a backpack. Mario is put on trial, found guilty, and ordered to clean up the mess and return the Shine Sprites. Even worse, the culprit seen spreading the graffiti looks like Mario thus, Mario is promptly arrested as he steps off the plane. As a result of this pollution, sun-shaped objects called Shine Sprites, the island's source of power, have dispersed, and the island is covered in a perpetual shadow. ![]() Upon arrival, Mario finds that the once-pristine island has been vandalized with graffiti and toxic goop. Mario sets out for the prestigious tropical retreat Isle Delfino, for a well-deserved vacation with Princess Peach, Toadsworth, and other many-colored Toads. ![]() In 2020 Super Mario Sunshine was re-released on the Nintendo Switch as part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars compilation, commemorating the 35th anniversary of the series. It was followed by Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii. It is the first Mario platformer since Super Mario 64's release six years earlier. It was released in Japan on July 19, 2002, in North America on August 26, 2002, and in Europe on October 4, 2002. Super Mario Sunshine is a 3D platformer developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo GameCube.
